The educational objectives of the degree course are directed to achieve a preparation enabling graduates to :
- Gain the knowledge necessary for the understanding of biological phenomena, the main mechanisms of functioning of organs and systems, heredity and physiological factors, also in correlation with the psychological, social and environmental determinants of health.
- Understand the basics of pathophysiology applicable to various clinical situations, in relation to parameters of quality of the environment that may pose a hazard to health.
- Know the environmental and work factors which may affect man's health
- Know the quality processes related to the production, processing and marketing of food, as well as issues related to food surveillance.
- Know the radiation protection rules provided by the Directives of European Union (law by Decree 26 May 2000, no 187)
- Plan, manage and evaluate the surveillance and inspection activities in life and work environments;
- Be able to carry out investigations and Coping surveys for accidents and occupational diseases;
- Know how to work with the criminal police in investigating crimes against the environment, on the conditions of hygiene and safety in the working and living environments and food;
- Acting both individually and in collaboration with other health and social professional, using, where necessary, the work of support staff;
- contribute directly to the updating of their professional and research profile;
- Develop the ability to work in groups and to integrate with other health professions
- Know the general bioethical principles, as well as the ethical, legal, medical and forensic principles of their profession
- Use at least one European Union language, other than Italian, in the specific field of expertise and to exchange information
The specific objectives of the course provide the skills needed to start a professional career at the end of the three-year course . To this end, the course provides knowledge in the propaedeutic core disciplines: general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, knowledge in the biological disciplines : biology, biochemistry, physiology, pathology, microbiology, toxicology.
The environmental risk factors will be studied in the courses of hygiene, epidemiology, occupational medicine and their impact on health will be the subject of medical disciplines: internal medicine, respiratory diseases and skin diseases. The methods of prevention, particularly to improve the environment will be studied in the teachings of hygiene, occupational medicine, radiation protection, environmental technical physics. Particular attention will be devoted to food, to the knowledge of their constituents, the processing methods, and to hygiene surveillance. The training course also provides knowledge on the plants for the treatment of liquid and solid waste and waste water purifying techniques; the sampling techniques of them will be the subject of practical training activities.
