Educational objectives
Hide
The educational objective of the single-cycle degree in Building Engineering-Architecture is to enter the labor market a professional designer of buildings which, through its interdisciplinary training, is able to identify problems and seek appropriate design solutions, keeping pace with the innovative dynamic of the area, to improve the quality of buildings under the physical, technical, aesthetic, performance, economic and procedural perspective. The building engineer-architect carries out the design (in all the stages, from preliminary studies up to operations), the construction and operation of building works. To achieve this objective the training of the Builiding Engineer-Architect is based on solid foundations of mathematics, physics, chemistry, design, architectural history, art history and covers all sectors characterizing the Architecture and Building Engineering-architecture: technical architecture, urban and architectural design, architectural restoration, construction theory and structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, building production, planning, valuation, administrative law, sociology and economics. Other core disciplines of Engineering (technical physics, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, materials technology) complete the training. The strong multi-disciplinary approach of the course makes the Building Engineer-Architect, a professional able to address current issues and ensures him/her the possibility of continuous updating. The training provided for the role of Building Engineer-Architect combines the education of civil and environmental engineers and architects, through a series of mandatory teachings, though ordered out of five continuous years, runs through four periods of significant and diversified learning. The first period is preparatory and includes core engineering (mathematics, geometry, physics, rational mechanics) and architectural subjects (architectural design and survey, architectural history and history of art, basics of architectural composition and computer-aided design, technology of construction elements, etc.). Since the whole course of studies aims at training in architectural design, most teachings, where possible and appropriate, address, in addition to theoretical and methodological content, implementation issues, through workshops, where students develop the necessary understanding, application and communication abilities. The second period, the third year, is characterized by the first activities of integrated design synthesis based on the knowledge and skills acquired by students, through the elaboration of integrated and complete projects. The third period is dedicated to cultural enrichment through the study of specialized disciplines completing advanced learning and technical -professional and cultural training, preparing students to face the fourth and final period. This latter aims at the completion of professional training according to each student specific objectives and cultural choices (through elective courses, in line with the general educational model), as well as at the final synthesis activity, consisting in the elaboration of the dissertation for the final exam. The dissertation normally consists of an architectural project developed in all its parts and of a series of disciplinary insights of one or more of the fundamental aspects of the construction history.
Professional opportunities

The single cycle course aims to train specialists capable of interpreting the complex challenges of the profession in both the public and private sectors. They possess the skills needed to operate in urban and architectural design to scale, seizing solicitations coming from technological as well as social innovation. They possess the tools for identifying, analyzing and solving building or technology problems related to the creation of architectural artifacts, controlling their implications in functional and morphological terms. Given the complexity of this professional profile as a whole, the training of undergraduates in Building Engineering-Architecture is structured to provide a solid scientific and technical grounding and to ensure, at the same time, the provision of a variety of disciplinary contributions, also derived from the humanities, which are functional with a modern interpretation of the figure of the designer in the field of architecture The Profile The single cycle Degree course in Building Engineering-Architecture has been activated in the academic year 2001-2002 in accordance to Directive 85/384/EEC, regulating higher education in the field of Architecture. The degree course has been recognized with a specific European decree published in the Official Journal of the European Union, no. 322 of 29 December 2004. In accordance with the provision of course Regulations, the degree course is divided into the following eight disciplinary blocks, consisting of the core and design teachings and applications aiming at ensuring the completeness of the course: 1. Area of the History of architecture and art 2. Area of Representation and Survey 3. Area of Mathematics and Physics 4. Economic, Legal and Sociological Area 5. Area of Architectural Design and Restoration 6. Area of Town 7. Area of Production Technology of Building Construction and 8. Area of Design and Technology Of Structures. Career opportunities Building engineers-architects have a system of skills and abilities enabling them to seize a number of opportunities in the sphere of contemporary technical professions. Their training as designers of physical space, oriented to interact not only with the design of the building architecture, but also with the themes of recovery of the existing heritage and urban design, enable them to placement opportunities: -In private practice, as architects or consultants for public or private clients in the field of architectural design, construction management, preparation of studies, technical analyses and town planning tools; -In the parts of local authorities and public administration at large requiring officials with technical evaluation skills and ability; -In the private sector, as experts in complex organisations, such as the ones which are increasingly active in the design, consulting and construction of public works and large real estate transactions.
Final examination features

Presentation and discussion of an original dissertation, developed independently and with the assistance of the faculty by the student during the "Degree Laboratory" provided in the fifth year of the course. The dissertation is the development of a project in which all the main aspects of the future profession are addressed (urban analysis, architectural, technological, structural, design, plant design, operation and construction, etc..).
