The 2nd cycle degree course in Regional, Urban and environmental planning aims at educating professionals with specific competences with respect to the planning, design and management of the processes of regional physical and socio-economic transformation. The professional planner should be able to: - construct methods and techniques for the understanding and interpretation of typical human settlement phenomena; - Develop methods and techniques for the construction of urban plans and large area; - Produce and direct a GIS (Geographic Information System); - Develop regional policies and strategies for local governments, institutions and enterprises. - produce plans at urban, local, scale, as well as general, implementation and industry plans, rules and regulations; - Produce urban and territorial plans with environmental and landscape relevance; - Assess and manage planning processes and actions for their implementation; - Plan and coordinate concerted actions; - Define terms and communication techniques of plans. The course provides in-depth knowledge of urban and regional planning, by offering an educational programme covering the areas of the city and territory through lectures, experimental workshops, seminars, meetings with public officials, stages in public agencies, organizations and private enterprises. The education of the town, territorial and environmental planner takes place through a learning formula that takes into account the experimental application related to the theoretical issues. For this reason, the course includes two town and territorial planning laboratories, a workshop for road infrastructure and two integrated courses. The 1st year workshop has predominantly territorial value, while the 2nd year one is mostly town-related. The road infrastructure workshop is located in the first year and connects to a large area. The two integrated courses also have experimental value. The first one aims at creating and transmitting knowledge, and focuses on techniques of mapping and computer representations, while and a second is aimed at developing urban design skills. In particular, the 1st planning workshop provides a module "agricultural systems and landscapes", the Planning Workshop II provides a Social Statistics module and a Human Geography module, the Laboratory of Infrastructures consists of two modules: Transportation economics and Geotechnical Engineering. Furthermore, in order to strengthen and extend the knowledge acquired in the first cycle, the course provides educational courses and integrated courses (6 to 10 credits) aiming at investigating issues related to Town Planning and evaluation of plans, to the History of Urban Planning, to Environment and Regional Sociology, to Geographic Information Systems, Applied Botany, Landscape Ecology, Landscape Planning, Urban and Regional Restoration and Regeneration, Integrated Urban Design and to the Representation of Local Traditions. Students, in addition, choose elective courses to complete their curriculum.
Graduates of this course might carry out the following activities: - town, regional and environmental design, planning and management (town plans, regional plans, general and implementation plans, sectoral plans, rules and regulations); - urban planning of complex intervention and management of the relevant actuation processes; - coordination and management of environmental and feasibility assessment of urban and regional plans and projects; - definition of strategies for administrations, institutions and companies, with respect to town, region and environmental recuperation, upgrading and transformation; - implementation and coordination of complex and specialist analysis of urban, regional and environmental structures. The typical professional ambits of this 2nd cycle graduates are: the private practice and the employment in public and private institutions and authorities for town, regional and environmental transformation and governance (institutional authorities, public and private companies and promotion and design companies). After passing the relevant National qualification exam, graduates may achieve the title of planner and they may enroll in the Architects, planners, landscape architects and conservators Registrar, section A, field 'Planning'. Moreover, after the 2nd cycle Degree, graduates of this course may continue their studies with PhD courses in Regional Planning.
For the admission to final examinations, students should have acquired all credits provided by the educational programme. The educational activities related to the preparation of the final examination consist of the preparation of a dissertation, under the guidance of one or more supervisors. The final examination consists of the production of a final synthesis paper demonstrating the activities carried out in the final regional and urban planning studio.. The preparation of the final dissertation entails activities equal to 9 credits; the activity should have interdisciplinary character, and it should be partly carried away also as a stage within institutions and public regional authorities in the relevant sectors. At the end of the 2nd cycle degree course an examining Board will evaluate candidate's curriculum as well as the dissertation for awarding the 2nd qualification as Regional, urban and environment planner, expressing an evaluation for a maximum of 110, with any praise
