2nd cycle graduates in Classic Studies should possess advanced competences enabling them: a) To read ad translate consciously classical texts, through their direct and consolidated competences in Greek and Latin languages; b) To place them in their context, applying the methodologies of Literary analysis, and of linguistic-philological and historical-archaeological sciences, examining sources in a critical and autonomous way; c) to interpret, also through the appropriate use of knowledge and skills related to other disciplinary areas, the fortune and the reception of antiquity in the medieval, modern and contemporary age; d) to use with full command the computer tools for the humanistic area as well as one European Union language For this purpose the course enables the student to use the knowledge they have already acquired, specializing them through an appropriate coverage of content and developing their attitude for analysis and research, respectively, on philology and classical literatures, on the history and civilization of the ancient Mediterranean, on classical, medieval and modern philology and literature, and finally, on diachronic linguistics. The course duration is two years: in the first year, students will study in depth and mature critical knowledge with respect to the fundamental disciplines of philology, linguistics, literature, history and archeology; in the second year they may complete their training in a stronger interdisciplinary perspective and engage in the writing of the dissertation for the final test.
Graduates in Classic Studies can start a career in secondary education, after completing the process of teaching qualification and passing competitions required by law. They may also continue their education and improve their research training in doctoral programs and second level university master courses in classic studies. Graduates may find a job as specialists in the organization, coordination and planning of activities related to the protection, promotion and enhancement of cultural heritage at public and private institutions, foundations, cultural institutions. Finally, the skills and knowledge with respect to classical civilization, languages and texts enable graduates to find professional opportunities in publishing, in the development and management of cultural projects, in t translation and dissemination of classical works and in the most diverse and specialized editing positions.
The final examination, awarded with 30 credits, consists of a written dissertation, prepared under the guidance of a supervising professor, in which students show the acquired competences and knowledge as well as their capability of tackling and carrying out autonomously and originally a research project. Graduates of this Degree Course should prove their full command of expositive and argumentative writing skills as well as of expression means and of the capability of organising, elaborating and structuring the results of a research project The modalities for the discussion and evaluation in terms of final mark are defined by the Course Regulations.
