Course info
The 1st cycle degree course in Biology aims at providing sound grounding in the main areas of biology and command of the methods and technologies related to the respective scientific research areas providing adequate training for understanding scientific and technological progress and to know and deal with living beings. The degree course, which might be articulated in various curricula, is designed in accordance with the national guidelines approved by the Board of Biologists of Italian Universities (CBUI), and it therefore is to be counted among the certified quality degree course with respect to professional opportunities as well as to further studies. The course provides for homogeneous and coherent training to all graduates, with respect to the typical educational objectives and core competences, for direct professional opportunities as well as for further 2nd cycle degree courses. The possible articulation in different curricula, with a common core training in the main areas of biology and in the multidisciplinary methods and technologies for biological research, will aim, on one hand, to provide graduates with sound cultural and methodological groundings for continuing their studies, through the needed training and tools to understand scientific and technological progress and to tackle in a more advanced way issues related to Life Sciences, without limiting the access to work; on the other hand it will enable graduates to choose a more specific professionalising training aiming at the acquisition of sound competences and operating skills to be spent immediately in the labour market, with respect in particular to the protection and management of the marine environment, to the monitoring of benthonic and floral-faunal settlement, to the monitoring of marine ecosystems, to the defence of biodiversity am to plant taxonomy and phytognosis, to phyto- and zoo-geography. 12 credits are awarded to elective activities. Stage activities are organised with highly qualified public or private agencies. At the end of the course, students will be awarded the 1st cycle degree in Biology, class L-13-Biology. A computer science laboratory will provide students with the competences and tools for communication and information management with respect to the typical research areas. In accordance with European harmonisation principles, learning outcomes respond to the specific requirements of the national Tuning Table (Board of Biologists of Italian Universities (CBUI) for class L-13.
1st cycle graduates in Biology may enrol in the National Order of Biologists B (Biologist-junior), upon passing a State examination. The skills provided by the Degree Course are consistent with the ones provided by the new Classification of Occupations ISTAT 2007 (Nomenclature and classification of professional Isfol-Istat units) and specifically listed in the "Intellectual, scientific and highly specialized Professions " in section 2.3 .1.1. Specialists in Life Sciences. Graduates in Biology will be able to work in a team with defined degrees of autonomy and fit in quickly in the workplace, in Europe and outside Europe, carrying out professional and technical activities in various fields, such as (industrial, horticultural, veterinary, food and agriculture, biotechnology, public and private research centres) laboratory production and technological activities, analysis, control and management services, as well as in all those public and private fields, where its necessary to classify, manage and use living organisms and their constituents, and manage the relationship between development and environmental quality; in multidisciplinary professional offices in the fields of environmental impact assessment and of the design of projects for the conservation and restoration of the environment and biodiversity. Access to subsequent training: 1st cycle graduates in Biology may have access to 2nd ccyel degree courses of class LM-6-Biology and all other classes of LM whose curricula entail L-13 specific areas. They may also have access to 1st level University Master Courses
Written paper prepared by the student (after passing English language test). The paper consists of as written report related to the stage and practice activities carried out by the students in university laboratories or in other public or private agencies, under the guidance of a professor of the Degree Course.
