Graduates of this course should: - possess advanced knowledge of two languages besides Italian, with full command of the variations due to the socio-linguistic, international and multimedia context of the language as well as of the receptive and productive skills of the speakers involved; - know the civilisation of the Country of the studied language in its historical-geographic, economic-social and political aspects, in a way to use them in an international communication perspective; - command the methods and tools of analysis and theoretical thinking about languages, and of applied linguistics in its declinations; - command the communication tools , including web-specific ones (sites, blogs, platforms and the like) and use them in professional activities; - be aware of the cognitive an psycho-social principles of multilingualism and multiculturalism, as well as the principal activities characterising them, with a particular attention to the variety of translation processes underlying linguistic activities and professional profiles; - command specialist language, with respect, in particular, to the audio-visual translation from specific language to Italian; - have acquired knowledge of core social, economic and legal science subjects. The course is divided into two curricula, “Western” and “Arabic and Islamic Studies”, with the same educational objectives and the same course organisation, despite the differences related to the diversity of languages and civilisations. The training is completed by the literature of the studied language, as well as by theoretical subjects related to linguistics and translation. Specific attention is paid to literary and audio-visual translation as well as to class. Specific translation.
Profile: Translator and liaison and negotiation interpreter/linguistic mediator - High-level translator in the literary, audio-visual, and specialist fields. Functions: Liaison interpreters and/or linguistic and cultural mediators carry out high responsibility tasks in intercultural relations between individuals, private citizens, and public bodies, and in the field of international relations. They can play coordinating roles at public and private companies, public administrations, volunteer associations, local authorities, as well as in the management of international organisations, in the sector of cooperation and development. They are also able to fit in professional contexts as experts of economic, social, and cultural integration, but also in the medical, juridical, administrative and tourism aeras. They can carry out their activity as specialist advisors in the field of European Union linguistic regulations. Literary translators carry out their activities as text producers and editors in various foreign languages, as freelancers or in publishing houses, public and private institutions, foundations, theatres. They can produce technical-scientific, non-fiction, journalistic texts in the two foreign languages they have studied a well as in Italian, ensuring the accurate choice of terms and the adequacy of linguistic choices with respect to text genres. Audio-visual (or multimedia) translators deal with the linguistic transposition of the original dialogues of audio-visual products, which use simultaneous communication through the acoustic and the visual channels. A task of the audio-visual translator is also to carry out the transfer and linguistic adaptation of a multi-semiotic dimension, including various communication types (sound, graphics, gesture), ranging from dubbing to the audio-visual description for blind and deaf people. Specialised translators carry out their activities in many specific application areas, from creative companies to cultural production ones, from tourist companies, to advertising, marketing, museum translation, medical translation as well ad juridical-administrative and socio-economic translation. Skills: Thanks to the course programme, which may be tuned based on specific professional interests, students will acquire the skills related to the above-mentioned professional functions, specifically: ith respect to the profile of liaison and negotiation interpreter/linguistic mediator, 2nd cycle graduates, in addition to the full written and spoken command of at least two foreign languages, possess the following skills: - Interdisciplinary international juridical and political economic skills, as well as knowledge in the sociology of culture, the history and literature of the studied linguistic areas, and ability to apply these skills to relate in heterogeneous and multicultural contexts. - Language skills, both theoretical and practical (in foreign languages as well as in Italian) enabling them to effectively interpret and produce specialist texts of various types for international communication. - Specific skills (in the two foreign languages and in Italian) with respect to web writing, to web content and dynamics management, in companies, associations and institutions. - Ability to select and use the most suitable linguistic-textual and translation strategies to carry out the assigned work. As for the profession of literary translator, graduates will have acquired: - Advanced linguistic knowledge and skills. - Advanced knowledge of the cultures and civilisations, of the languages from and to which they translate, as well as solid literary competence. - Ability to carry out the analysis of discourse and knowledge of the main characteristics and difference of spoken an written codes (in Italian as well as in the two foreign languages), enabling them to analyse and interpret the elements of a communications, as well as to perform text transcription. - Computing skills, also applied to the terminological and lexicographic research needed to translate texts of various types. - Computing skills, also applied to interlinguistic and intercultural communication, as well as to the automatic and assisted translation techniques, enabling them to define and carry out a translation project using terminological databases and of various electronic dictionaries and corpora. - Computing and technical skills for the research, testing and elaboration of sources and to produce original contents, targeted to specific audience. With respect to the profession of audio-visual (or multimedia) translator, graduates will have acquired: - Specialist competence in the source and target languages. - Knowledge of the technical and methodological tools suitable to carry out their activity. - Ability to apply the audio-visual translation strategies enabling the parallel rendering of verbal and non-verbal elements. - Command of the various types of audio-visual linguistic transfer (namely interlinguistic subtitling, dubbing, free comment, interlinguistic subtitling for Italian and English deaf people, audio-visual description). Specialised translators must possess linguistic and translation skills in various areas, 2nd cycle graduates will have acquired the following skills: - Knowledge of linguistic and rhetoric technicalities enabling them to be “trans-creators” of advertising texts. - Linguistic, computing and technical skills for the translation of tourist websites. - Linguistic and cultural competence in the outfitting of museum and exhibition systems. - Linguistic and technical skills for the translation of medical texts. - Lexical and morpho-syntactic skills for translating and interpreting juridical-administrative texts. Professional opportunities: - National, international, and non-profit organisations, even nongovernmental ones (e.g., in the field of international cooperation and help for development and of social and cultural integration policies) - Public and third sector bodies and institutions. - Administrative-organisational and public relations branches of private companies (e.g., companies specialised in the organisation of national and international events, publishers, advertising companies). - Translation agencies. - Subtitling agencies.
The 2nd cycle Degree in "Modern Languages and Translation for international relations" is awarded after passing a final examination, consisting of the presentation and discussion of an original thesis prepared by the student under the guidance of a supervisor, in one of the relevant scientific sectors in the Course syllabus and in which the student has earned credits. The modalities of the final examination and for the choice of the supervisor are described in the Regulations of the Degree Course.
